We can help with Nature Deficit Disorder

As you walk through the wooded area at the Adventure Learning Center, you will hear the crunch of sticks beneath your feet, the sound of songbirds in the distance, the cool crisp wind on your face and the warmth of the sun coming through the leaves in the trees.

It is not often the children growing up in the concrete jungle of the Des Moines metro get a chance to experience nature at its fullest in one of our county or state parks. With new and advanced technology coming out daily we have slowly taken away from the time spent outdoors as adults and children
While a growing number of children's advocates and political leaders are worried our culture's disconnection from nature is harming kids. Concerns about the long-term consequences on children’s physical and emotional well-being have spawned a national movement to "leave no child inside.

What is Nature Deficit Disorder? It is a term coined by Richard Louv in his 2005 book Last Child in the Woods, which refers to the trend in which children are spending less time outdoors, resulting in a wide range of behavioral problems. Recent research has drawn a further contrast between the declining number of National Park visits in the United States and increasing consumption of electronic media by children.

It is time for adults and children alike to reunite with nature and the great outdoors by coming to the Adventure Learning Center to challenge themselves on our state of the art low and high ropes courses, learn how to read a GPS units, compasses, and much more. We are committed to bringing Individuals outside to see what is going on around them, without having to “click it” on the computer screen.

Why wait? Schedule your team to come out to the Adventure Learning Center today by calling Melissa O’Neil at (515) 957-5767.
